The virus that causes dengue is known as the dengue virus (DENV).
Death rates from severe dengue are reduced to about 1% when disease progression is identified early and patients have access to quality medical care.
Effective vector control methods are necessary for the prevention and treatment of dengue.
A virus called dengue fever is rapidly spreading over the world thanks to mosquitos.
This can range from asymptomatic illness (when people are not aware they are infected) to severe flu-like symptoms in those who are affected.
There is a higher chance of death in people who have dengue fever.

In most Asian and Latin American nations, dengue fever is increasingly leading to hospitalization and death among children and adults.
The Flaviviridae family of viruses is responsible for causing dengue disease.
The virus that causes dengue fever has four different serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4).
Pathogenic organisms raise the possibility of acquiring severe dengue.
The prevalence of dengue fever worldwide has increased significantly in recent decades.
One estimate places the annual incidence of dengue virus infections at 390 million (95% credible interval, 284-528 million), with 96 million (67-136 million) showing signs of sickness (with a 95% credible interval,
3.9 billion people worldwide are in danger of getting dengue fever, according to a different study on the condition.
Over 15 times more dengue cases have been reported to WHO in the past almost two years.
A shift in national reporting and recording procedures for dengue fever to health ministries and the World Health Organization can help to explain in part this worrying increase in case numbers.
Distribution and dengue epidemics Before 1970, there had only been large dengue epidemics in 9 nations.
Following malaria, dengue fever is the second most typical reason for fever among visitors leaving low- and middle-income countries.
For the first time in Afghanistan, dengue disease was discovered, and it spread throughout the country.
With more than 2.38 million cases reported in the Americas region, dengue fever outbreaks were especially frequent in 2016.

Transmission from mosquito to person Female mosquitoes carrying the virus bite humans and typically carry the Aedes aegypti virus.
This can apply to those who are asymptomatic from dengue infection, those who are pre-symptomatic but have not yet acquired asymptomatic symptoms, and those who show no symptoms of illness (they are asymptomatic).
A higher risk of mosquito infection is associated with the patient’s high viremia and fever; on the other hand, a reduced risk of mosquito infection is associated with high levels of DENV-specific antibodies (Nguyen et al 2013 PNAS).
Although the rates of vertical transmission seem to be low, the risk of vertical transmission seems to be related to whether or not the dengue infection occurs during pregnancy.
Due to international trade in old tires (a breeding habitat for the secondary dengue vector Aedes albopictus) and other products, the secondary dengue vector has spread to over 25 countries in Europe and over 32 states in the United States.
Infants, kids, and adults can all get dengue fever, a serious illness that resembles the flu but seldom kills.
According to the World Health Organization, dengue fever can be classified as mild or severe.
The classification of dengue fever as having warning signals or not is meant to help medical professionals prioritize patients for hospital admission, ensure close supervision, and lower the risk of developing more severe dengue fever (see below).
Infants, young toddlers, and adults can get dengue, a serious virus that resembles the flu but seldom results in death. After an incubation period of 4–10 days following the bite by an infected mosquito, symptoms typically last for 2–7 days. Dengue is divided into two main categories by the World Health Organization: mild dengue and severe dengue. The sub-classification of dengue with or without warning signals is intended to assist healthcare professionals in deciding which patients should be admitted to hospitals for intensive monitoring and to reduce their chance of contracting the more severe dengue (see below).
Dengue
Dengue should be suspected when a high fever (40°C/104°F) is accompanied by 2 of the following symptoms during the febrile phase:
- severe headache
- pain behind the eyes
- muscle and joint pains
- nausea
- vomiting
- swollen glands
- rash.
Severe dengue
A patient enters what is called the critical phase normally about 3-7 days after illness onset. It is at this time when the fever is dropping (below 38°C/100°F) in the patient, that warning signs associated with severe dengue can manifest. Severe dengue is a potentially fatal complication, due to plasma leaking, fluid accumulation, respiratory distress, severe bleeding, or organ impairment.
Warning signs that doctors should look for include:
- severe abdominal pain
- persistent vomiting
- rapid breathing
- bleeding gums
- fatigue
- restlessness
- blood in vomit.
If patients manifest these symptoms during the critical phase, close observation for the next 24–48 hours is essential so that proper medical care can be provided, to avoid complications and risk of death.
At this point, when the patient’s temperature is lowering (below 38°C/100°F), serious dengue-related warning signals may start to appear.
Dengue fever has no particular therapy.
Once symptoms start to appear, those with dengue fever should see a doctor.
The subset of trial participants who were presumed to be seronegative at the time of initial vaccination had a greater risk of more serious dengue and dengue hospitalizations when compared to unvaccinated participants.
As a result, the vaccine is meant for people aged 9 to 45 who reside in endemic areas and have already had at least one confirmed dengue virus infection.
Stay away from mosquito bites if you have dengue fever during the first week after being ill. During this period, the virus may be circulating in your blood and you risk passing it to fresh, uninfected mosquitoes, which could subsequently infect others.
According to the WHO position document on the Dengvaxia vaccine, clinical trials have proven that the live attenuated dengue vaccine CYD-TDV is effective and safe in patients who have previously contracted the dengue virus (September 2018).
However in people who receive their first spontaneous dengue infection after vaccination, it does increase the likelihood of severe infection (those who were seronegative at the time of vaccination).
Under this strategy, vaccination will only be given to those who have previously contracted dengue (based on an antibody test, or on a documented laboratory-confirmed dengue infection in the past).
The sensitivity and specificity of the existing tests, local priorities, dengue epidemiology, country-specific dengue hospitalization rates, and the cost of both the CYD-TDV and screening tests will all need to be carefully taken into account at the national level.
As part of a comprehensive plan for preventing and controlling dengue illness, vaccination should be investigated.

The following are some of the ways the WHO reacts to dengue: aids nations in confirming outbreaks through its network of cooperating labs; offers technical assistance and direction to nations for the efficient management of dengue outbreaks; aids nations in improving their reporting systems and capturing the full burden of the disease; and offers nation- and regional-level training in clinical management, diagnostics, and vector control with Response (2017-2030)
